He Is Holy
He Is Holy1
He is! He is infinitely Holy. The Lord YHWH, the LORD, is the most Holy One,2 the One3 and only True God,4 the Everlasting God,5 eternally self-existent.6 For anyone or anything else to exist, He must beget or create, for He is the only self-existent, unbegotten,7 and uncreated One. The LORD creates according to His good pleasure.8 To His creation, the LORD is utterly Holy, He is completely the Other,9 the perfectly sacred because He is infinitely eternal and His creation is not. Holiness is the chief attribute of the LORD God; all of His other divine attributes flow from His Holiness. God’s Holiness is proclaimed throughout the Bible, beginning with the very first verse, where He is declared the Creator of all else that exists, the spiritual realm (“the heavens”), the physical realm (“the earth”), and even time itself (“In the beginning”). He is the LORD of time, all time, from the beginning to the end.10 He exists outside of time and is Holy with respect to time. He is Holy! Holy! Holy!11
So holy that sinless seraphim cover their feet and their faces, not daring to look at Him directly lest they be undone were He to reveal Himself in greater glory. So holy and glorious that no man can see God and live.12 If the LORD God were to reveal Himself in the fullness of His unveiled holiness and glory, man, angel, and all of creation would be completely undone, because that which is created is finite, and the LORD God is infinite. That which is created is never equal to nor greater than the Creator.13
Nothing and no one created can fully apprehend or comprehend the infinite. The infinite, glorious Holiness of the LORD God requires a condescension,14 a veiling, a mediator, between the Infinite Holy One and all else that is not.
The required and only proper response from each and every one of us His creatures is to fall on our knees and our faces before Him in complete submission and worship, proclaiming “Thou Art! You Are LORD! To You alone be all glory!”.15
